MAKING AN INFORMED DECISION - Choosing the appropriate driveway or garden  gate can be much harder than it initially appears.  This decision is important to finding a gate that will wear well in its specific environment and application. These choices will be the difference between a gate that will lead a long life of  servitude and one that will prematurely retire.  It also will be the difference between one that will enhance and blend with your home and one that will distract and detract.

In an age where consumers are surrounded by false promises and poor quality our company continues to be the exception.

Regardless of whether you are seeking our Amish crafted wood gates or our authentic blacksmith crafted wrought iron series you can be assured that our products truly feature premium quality and craftsmanship.

Unfortunately today more than ever we need to be concerned about the security of our homes. The primary defense is our entrance and homes perimeter.  A property gate can be an important deterrent for burglary, theft, unwanted visitors and the common nosey site-seer.  It will also add security and peace of mind while at the same time enhance your property and increase its value.  So it is important that these choices are made properly for your specific gate needs and requirements.  There are many gate companies out there most selling inferior and poorly crafted cheap products.  Be aware, especially with driveway gates, you will get what you pay for.  It is better to pay a bit more for a gate and avoid common very costly problems (gate sagging, corrosion, poor construction) than it is to buy an inevitably disposable gate and literally throw away your investment in a few years time.

We have created this section of our site to help you make an informed decision and to straighten out some of the common misconceptions about gate materials and construction.  We will also discuss some of the common problems associated with gates and how to avoid them.

CHOOSING A GATE STYLE: Is the design compatible with your home?  It is important to be careful when choosing a design to keep in mind the surrounding architecture.

ORNATE? SIMPLE? TRADITIONAL?

MODERN?

These are just some of the style options you will be choosing from.  Selecting the right one will make a significant difference in the resulting appeal of your gate.  Our product line of gates offers an array of style choices so you are sure to find many that are well-suited to your home.   If you would like help selecting a design for your home, please let us know we would be happy to refer you to several of our designs that will enhance your existing architecture.

When selecting a style consider the style of your home.  Is it ornate, simple, traditional or modern?  The gate you select should reflect the same.  Some styles of architecture exhibit more than one of these and consequently are more versatile will offer more choices than others. In these instances you may select the same options with your gate.  For example a French Revival home would be appropriate with either a very  ornate gate or a traditional style gate.  Because it has elements of both traditional/historic style as well as very ornate elements.  So consequently the gate can reflect either of these styles.  It is up to the home owner to decide which he/she would like to express.

An example of a bad style match would be a very ornate cast iron gate with a plain earthy Pueblo/Santa Fe style home.  The clean and simple lines of the home will contrast with the curves and ornate decorum of the gate.  A beautiful Victorian Queen Anne or Antebellum Plantation would be much better suited with such an ornate gate.  The Santa Fe home would be best enhanced with a simple or modern style wood.  Remember the goal of having a beautiful entrance is for the gates to enhance, not overpower your homes style.  A better impression is made by simple beauty rather than gaudy extravagance.

Below you will find a guide of suggested gate material and design per architectural style.  Don't see your home style?  We would be happy to help with your gate selection, please inquire.

CHOOSING A GATE MATERIAL: What Material is Best? There are several gate materials to choose from depending on your specific application and environmental conditions.  If your gates are to be a securing feature you will want to choose from either our strong aluminum series or our wrought iron series of gates.  If your gates will be near ocean front or harsh weather conditions, you may want to choose an Aluminum gate for its corrosion resistance or our IPE wood gates for their tolerance of harsh climates.  Below we have dedicated a section to the description of each available material.  You will also be able to review the pros and cons to each material type.

(L) low (M) moderate (H) high

Gate Materials Pros & Cons Cast Aluminum Wood Wrought Iron
Corrosion Resistance* H - L
Durability* (exterior application) H M H
Cost* M M H
Weight (heavy, light) L L H
Maintenance L M H
Life Expectancy* H L - H H
Corrosion Resistance: Is the level of resistance a metal has against corrosion & oxidation (rusting).  Some metals have very high corrosion resistant while others are very susceptible unless coated with a thick protective finish.

Durability: Is the ability of a material to withstand its environment in a functional manner.  Some metals are more durable than others depending on the protective finish.

Life Expectancy: Inevitably all materials will eventually degrade it is only a matter of time.  Dependant on environmental conditions, exposure, specific materials durability, etc. the life expectancy of a material may increase or decrease.

Cast Aluminum:

Unfortunately most peoples' perception of aluminum is not more than a flimsy pop can, but it is really quite the contrary. There are many grades and strengths of aluminum.  One of aluminum's most valuable characteristics is it's high corrosive resistance. It is also very light weight and can be machined thin and flexible or strong and thick.  Why aren't more outdoor items cast aluminum? The draw back to aluminum is its cost.  It is a very expensive metal, three times the cost of cast iron and with the markets demand for cheap disposable items, very few manufacturers will bother trying to sell this great material.

Our aluminum gates are made from structural grade cast  aluminum.  This is one of the strongest and most resilient grades of aluminum.  It is the same material used to build industrial buildings.  The material looks and is made the same as antique cast iron, you cannot tell the difference by looking at it.  It is not possible to bend or break the decorative components on our cast aluminum gates by hand or average human force.  The frames are constructed of durable galvanized steel with an aluminum cover that additionally prevents corrosion.   One of the best features of cast aluminum is it's versatility in design.  Cast metals allow for very ornate design options that other metals cannot cost effectively offer.  This is why cast iron was so popular at the turn of the century.  These beautifully designed gates add an elegance all their own, lightweight and nearly maintenance free they are perfect for areas in corrosive climates and clients who enjoy very intricate and ornate designs.  Many finish choices available including faux patinas and verdigris finishes.

Wrought Iron:

Today's market is flooded by cheaply constructed import steel items painted black and labeled "wrought iron" these products are the main reason for confusion about the material and method in which it is produced.  Many people think wrought iron is any metal that is black in color and bent in some fashion.  This cannot be further from the truth.  The term wrought iron conveys both the material's name and the method of its forming.  The word "wrought" means to be drawn out or formed.  This is how true wrought iron products are formed by hand on the anvil by skilled blacksmiths.  The metal is heated, hammered thin and formed into scrolls and other decorative elements.  Then there is the actual material wrought iron.  All modern "wrought iron" items crea
